INTRODUCTION: The clipper was born in the shipyards of Baltimore around 1820. With the completely new and original naval characteristics with marine designers everywhere coninued to emulate till today, long and narrow hull..with narrow, cutting bow...low freeboard, steamlined stern and deep of draught.

The Cutty Sark, a tea clipper launched on the river Clyde in 1869, starting adventurous service on February 26th of 1870.

It was meant to be the most beautiful clipper in 1868, designed to overtake the speed of its adversary the Themopylae. It sailed the seas to China to transport tea. With the opeining of the Suez Canal it was diverted to the wool trade route to and from Australia.

After 25 years of its involvement in enterprises which were not alwasy profitable, Cutty Sark was acquired by the Portuguese and its names was changed to "Ferreira".

In 1922, with due thanks to the Captain Wildfred Dowman, the vessel was returned to England, where her original characteristics were restored along with her original evocative name.
